Just a special little birthday shout-out to one of my favorite authors, J.D. Salinger! His birthday was actually yesterday, January 1st, but I thought he deserved a little late recognition anyway. I could read from the perspective of the beloved Holden Caulfield any day. While listening to my The Writer’s Almanac podcast, I learned that Catcher in the Rye is still the 2nd most taught book in American high schools, and also remains the most challenged novel.
Here are a few fun facts about Mr. Salinger:
1. He has 2 children
2. He was married 3 times
3. Catcher in the Rye was his only novel
4. His full name is Jerome David Salinger
5. His story, “Slight Rebellion of Madison”, published by The New Yorker in 1946 features Catcher in the Rye protagonist, Holden Caulfield.
If you’re looking for any kind of J. D. Salinger goodies, you’ve got some great options. On the blog a few months ago, I featured a great pair of Salinger inspired flats created by Etsy user, LeadFootLucy. There’s also this fabulous shirt from Etsy user Clarafornia:
Here’s a great Catcher in the Rye lighter from Etsy user, PatchTrash:
And finally, a tile featuring one of Salinger’s most famous quotes, “Mother’s are all slightly insane” from Etsy user, JustChuggingAlong
And of course, you should purchase of copy (and read it!) of Catcher in the Rye, which can be found pretty much anywhere books are sold. Any other J. D. Salinger stuff you want to share? Post it below!
